Enedina AlvarezEnedina Alvarez, a 54-year-old single parent, says she must be both mother and father to her teenage children. Yet, with two jobs, she has barely enough money to house, feed and clothe them—and precious little time to spend with them. Alvarez says, “I pray to God that my kids do not get sick because I cannot pay the medical bills.” More

Who Are Hotel Housekeepers?*
Nearly all hotel housekeepers are women. The majority are women of color and immigrants.
There are 1.3 million hotel workers in the U.S. and 280,000 in Canada, of whom approximately one quarter are housekeepers.
Hotel Housekeeper Work Is Dangerous Work
Hotel workers have a 40% higher injury rate (5.9%) than workers in the service sector (4.2%).
According to a recent study of company records covering thousands of employee injuries, hotel housekeepers face an injury rate of 10.4%, almost double the injury rate for non-housekeepers (5.6%).
Hotel housekeeper injuries are debilitating. Back injuries, housemaids' knee (bursitis), and shoulder pain can lead to permanent disability.

Coalition for a New Century

CENTURY BOULEVARD IS HOME TO LOW-WAGE JOBS, STRIP CLUBS, HIGH CRIME RATES AND ADJACENT COMMUNITIES MIRED IN POVERTY. These conditions neglect the needs of tens of thousands of Angelenos, deprive the city of millions of dollars in potential tax revenue and send the wrong message to visitors about Los Angeles. The Coalition for a New Century was created to improve conditions for workers, communities and the hotel industry alike in this vital part of L.A. We believe that, working together, we can turn the gateway to Los Angeles into a gateway to prosperity. More

BLUE RIBBON COMMISSION REPORT

Opportunity For All: Creating Shared Prosperity in the Gateway to Los AngelesEarlier this year, the Coalition for a New Century convened the blue ribbon commission Century Boulevard Commission on Jobs, Tourism and Communities, headed by former Los Angeles City Councilmember Ruth Galanter and Rev. Cecil Murray. The Commission heard testimony from hotel workers, community leaders, economists and educators on the conditions in the Century Corridor. An audience of over 200 residents, workers and civic leaders listened to religious leaders and educators testify to the extent of poverty in the area and its impacts on families. The resulting report Opportunity For All: Creating Shared Prosperity in the Gateway to Los Angeles contributes to the Coalition’s goal of creating a Community Benefits “zone” in the area, that would improve working conditions for hotel workers, upgrade the community through public investment, and make the area a lively and prosperous destination for visitors to Los Angeles that will benefit workers, community, the city, and hotels alike.
